Philadelphia-based photographer Paolo Morales’s sensitive portraits of his family and friends invite viewers to contemplate the importance of human connection against the backdrop of the major sociological shifts of the last decade. Across three series of photographs that incorporate both documentary and vernacular aesthetics, Morales examines the conditions of the pandemic, gentrification, the challenges of elder care, and the ongoing legacy of racial inequity in the United States. The exhibition contributes to programming surrounding Delaware County Community College’s 2021-2022 College-wide Reading selection, Jacqueline Woodson’s Brown Girl Dreaming (Puffin Books 2014), a poetic memoir of Woodson’s childhood. Similar to Woodson’s use of autobiography to consider the legacy of the Civil Rights milestones of the 1960s and 1970s, Morales’s photographs build empathy between viewers and his subjects as a means to interrogate the most pressing concerns of the early twenty-first century.
